Craig Sheridan, 2nd Dan (Nidan)

Sensei Craig

At what club do you train?

Sensei Adam's Monday evening club in Laindon.

When did you start training?

Started training originally when I was 5yrs old under Jikishin with sensei Parker and got my junior purple belt but due to having epilepsy I had to stop but was allowed to start again as an adult in 2009 as a white belt.

Why did you choose Ju Jitsu over other martial arts?

Tried many martial arts such as BJJ, Muay Thai and Wing Chun but found jujitsu the best for me as it's more all rounded to deal with most situations that life throws at you.

Did you do other sports/martial arts before Ju Jitsu?

I have done BJJ, Muay Thai and Wing Chun.

Tell us about your first Ju Jitsu class.

I was 5 yrs old feeling nervous but excited at the same time and remember just wanting to get on the mat and see if I could do what the black belts could :)

When did you think about getting your Black Belt?

To be honest always wanted to be a black belt from day one but didn't really see this as believable until I gained my brown belt and knew I was not far away from gaining this achievement.

Was it difficult to attain?

Extremely hard for me a lot of blood sweat and tears went into attaining it.

What does a "black Belt" mean to you?

For me it's the start of the journey in gaining true understanding of this martial art.

Ever had to use Ju Jitsu for real?

No thankfully and I hope I never have to.

Do you enter martial arts competitions?

Yes I have competed in British, international and UN championships.

Has Ju Jitsu changed your life in any positive or negative way?

All positive and that's why I have all four of my children involved so we can all get the positive benefits in our lives.

What do you see as the advantages of Ju Jitsu?

Confidence, self discipline, self awareness, a greater social circle, fitness and much much more.

How much time does your training require?

At least 1.5hrs per week but does vary with gradings etc. for instance when I was training for my 1st dan I was training 3/4 lessons per week.

If you could advise a beginner on one thing about Ju Jitsu what would it be?

Just give it a go with Wakarishin's policy of first lesson free you have nothing to lose but so much to gain.
